Do you see the flower on the grave slab? This flower represents a love story – the story of the love that the people of Hamburg have for their CPE. These three letters, ‘CPE’, stand for Carl Philipp Emanuel, with the surname Bach: Carl Philipp Emanuel was the most famous son of the world-renowned composer Johann Sebastian Bach.
As the Musical Director in Hamburg, CPE shaped the city’s musical life from 1768. Whilst he didn’t assume the position until the age of 54, his compositions and concerts soon made him popular. And, in Hamburg, he still is to this day.
