Take a look at the crypt floor. To this day, there are still actual graves here under the large stone slabs with their inscriptions. Burial inside the church was once common and it was St. Michael’s architect Ernst Georg Sonnin who had the brilliant idea of building a vaulted crypt directly below the church. Anyone who wanted to be laid to rest here in St. Michael’s would have to pay for it and thus finance construction of the church.
