With its approximately 60 singers under the direction of Church Musical Director Manuel Gera, the St. Michael’s Kantorei is responsible for much of the church music at Hamburg’s main church. The service programme with soloists and the St. Michael’s Kantorei orchestra is especially important to the members of the St. Michael’s congregation.
Great pieces of church music are performed at Easter, Pentecost, Christmas and on Totensonntag. Between 1,000 and 1,800 people flock to St. Michael’s for each of the eight evening Nativity prayer services between Christmas and the new year. The St. Michael’s Kantorei shares its musical responsibilities with the St. Michael’s Choir and – in the case of the Nativity prayer services – with three other main church choirs.
The St. Michael’s Kantorei organises one to two concerts each year. The Kantorei’s annual concert is usually held sometime around Michaelmas (29 September). The repertoire of these concerts ranges from John Rutter’s Gloria and Mendelssohn’s psalm settings to Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor.
