For the first time, a woman has taken on the role of St. Michael’s tower trumpeter. Neele Fokken will now share this role with our long-standing tower trumpeter Josef Thöne.

Neele Fokken studied trumpet, cultural management and primary school teaching and works as a trumpet and music teacher at the state youth music school and at a primary school in Hamburg. ‘I am grateful for the trust placed in me to continue this long tradition. I am very impressed by the consistency that this cultural heritage radiates, and I am delighted every time I get to play the chorale from the tower.’

Every day at 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. – on Sundays only at 12 noon – the tower keepers play a chorale in all four directions. This tradition has been upheld at St. Michael's for more than 300 years.
