Born in Hamburg, David Baaß grew up with music. At the age of twelve, he became an organist at Eben-Ezer Church in Eppendorf, Hamburg. In addition to his passion for classical music, he has developed a huge interest in jazz and Latin American music through the school big band, as these focus on improvisation, which has always been his key approach to music.
During his schooldays, David Baaß was active in different band projects and took organ lessons with Andreas Maurer. He also took the C church musician exam. Due to his internship in church music and in youth work at St. Michael’s and his alternative civilian service at the St. Michael’s nursery, he has a special relationship with St. Michael’s.
He’s a co-founder of the KBP-Trio, won the Hamburg state competition ‘JugendJazzt’ in the categories Combo and Big Band in 2012 and 2013, and successfully took part in the German competition. David Baaß is studying medicine at Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, where he has a permanent position as a pianist. He is also head of the UKE student choir, which occasionally performs during Praytime services. Since January 2015, David Baaß has been head of the St. Michael’s Youth Band and musical head of Praytime services. He also works with a variety of singing ensembles and is a freelance pianist.
