St. Michael’s is one of the most important centres for church music in Hamburg:

Choirs made up of church members, children and young adults, a horn ensemble, two orchestras and the Trinity band all form the body of sound of the church and play a key role in parish life and development.

During services, the gospel is spread through a diverse range of music, including cantatas, masses, Gregorian chant, horn ensemble music and organ accompaniment. During the weekly musical vespers, external choirs are given the opportunity to perform at St Michael’s.

Choir concerts are held regularly at St. Michael’s, whilst other concerts occur once a year, including Matthew Passion and the Christmas Oratorio by J. S. Bach, J. Brahms’ A German Requiem performed by the St. Michael’s Choir, other organ concerts such as Organ Summer and the pedal point organ concert (Orgelpunkt), and the Bach Weeks in autumn. Renowned choirs and orchestras such as NDR and Hamburger Philharmoniker rent St. Michael’s as an event venue.

The horn ensemble performs a spiritual concert from the tower on the first Sunday of Advent, on Christmas Eve, on New Year’s Day and on Easter Sunday, and holds an annual Carnival concert.

The St. Michael’s Music office would be happy to answer any questions you may have about current concerts, musical programmes and ticket sales. You can find concert dates in the Music calendar (in German).
