Some of the 2,671 pipes of the Marcussen organ

St. Michael’s is one of the most beautiful baroque churches in northern Germany. With its unmistakable copper roof, the tower is Hamburg’s most famous landmark. St. Michael’s has plenty to offer, so it’s well worth a visit.

On this page, we’d like to provide you with a brief overview of the key facts about St. Michael’s.

The five organs

  • The large organ (Steinmeyer) in the west gallery is from 1962 and has five manuals, a pedalboard, 86 stops and 6,674 pipes.
  • The antiphonal division in the loft above the large organ has 17 stops and 1,222 pipes. An acoustic channel measuring 20 metres in length carries the sound up to the ceiling rose in the centre of the church ceiling at a height of 26 metres. The organ is played from a primary console.
  • The concert organ (Marcussen) in the north gallery is from 1914. It has been renovated twice and features two manuals, a pedalboard, 42 stops and 2,671 pipes.
  • The Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach organ in the south gallery was installed in the middle of November 2010 and is equipped with 676 pipes, 13 stops on two manuals and a pedalboard.
  • The Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy organ in the crypt is a romantic instrument supplied by the Striebel company in 1917. It has two manuals, seven stops and 435 pipes.

The tower
